Public Transport in Sydney  

Like most large modern cities Sydney has a plethora of public transport options to help you get around the city.  On the whole these services are regular and very reliable.

Transport Information

 All information relating to transport around Sydney can be found through the Transport Infoline site www.131500.com.

 This site contains a trip planner as well as all the timetables for all the transport modes.  It also contains links to attractions with relating transport information, and useful information around major events and links to all the other websites mentioned in this page.  The triplanner, timetable and latest transport news is also available via WAP on the mobile phones.

Trains

Sydney has an extensive rail network that extends to Penrith & Richmond in the west, Bondi Junction in the east, Sutherland & Campbelltown in the South and the Central Coast to the North.  Intercity services extend to Lithgow & Blue Moutains to the west, Woollongong to the south and Newcastle to the North.

The City Circle provides access to all major City stations.  This service starts at Central station and loops through Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay, St James, Museum and back to Central.

Buses

Sydney Buses provides over 300 different routes across the city.  Most bus services are reliable and can get you to pretty much any destination you desire.

Sydney Explorer (Red Bus) - The Sydney explorer bus service is a simple hop on hop off tourist service that visits all the major tourist destinations in the central city area.  This includes Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour, Kings Cross and most things in between.  Sydney Explorer departs every 18 minutes from Circular Quay. This Red bus starts its tour from bus stand_ B on Alfred Street, Circular Quay. This is in front of McDonalds. You can buy tickets (cash only) on board or from the Transit shop kiosk (cash & credit card, right in front of Macca's).

Bondi Explorer (Blue Bus)  - You’ve heard about those famous Sydney beaches, well the Bondi Explorer can take you there.  Service stops at all major beachside locations including Double Bay, Rose Bay, Watsons Bay, Bondi & Coogee Beaches.  Bondi Explorer departs every 30 minutes from Circular Quay. This Blue bus starts its tour from bus stand_ B on Alfred Street, Circular Quay. This is in front of McDonalds. You can buy tickets (cash ) on board or from the Transit shop kiosk  cash & credit card, right in front of Macca's).

Sydney Ferries

A highlight of any visit to Sydney is a trip across beautiful Sydney Harbour on a Sydney Ferry.  Carrying more than 14 million people every year, the ferry system is quite comprehensive and covers a 37km stretch of water from Manly to Parramatta.  The ferries also service alot of the popluar harbourside attractions including Taronga Zoo, Darling Harbour, Luna Park and Manly Beach.  All sydney ferries operate from circular quay.

Light Rail & Monorail

Sydney has a limited lightrail or tram system that runs from Central Station through ChinaTown, Darling Harbour, Star City Hotel & Casino and the Sydney Fish Markets. This service then continues on into the inner city suburbs of Glebe, Annandale and Lilyfield.

The Monorail runs on a circuit between the city centre and Darling Harbour.  This is very rarely used by locals and is more for the tourists.
